The University of San Diego fires Sam Scholl from his head coach position for the Toreros.

On Sunday, the University made their decision involving the USD alumni after their recent defeat in the 2nd round of the basketball West Coast Conference tournament.

Scholl closes his USD head coach journey after four seasons for his alma mater, with an overall record of 50-67 for the Toreros, including a 15-16 record this season which means the team didn't win half of their games at the very least.

Bill McGillis, Executive Director of USD's Athletic Department, confirmed the big time decision through an emailed statement, stating that the school will now be on the hunt for a new basketball head coach.

The Executive Director emphasizes that Scholl was incredibly beneficial to the young men that he coached during his 4 years as USD's men's basketball coach.

“Decisions like this are very difficult, especially when it involves people you care so much about,” said Bill McGillis. “Coach Scholl is an amazing man, and he has been a tremendous mentor to the young men in our program. Although we have not achieved the competitive progress we expected, Sam has poured his heart and soul into USD basketball, and he has led our program with great integrity from day one. Both as a student-athlete and as a coach, Sam has represented the university with great class, and no one cares more about the Toreros than he does. We are truly grateful for Sam’s leadership and wish him the very best moving forward.”

The school says that Scholl sustains qualities that every leader should have, and that he embodies exactly what a basketball head coach for USD should strive to be.

"Tremendous character, integrity and values that match the University; expertise and experience in the West Coast Conference; ability to compete at a championship-level in one of the nation’s top conferences; and a true servant-leadership heart that positively impacts the scholar-athletes." USD writes about Scholl on their official athletics website.

Scholl's greatest year at the helm of the men's team came during the 2018-19 season, where the Toreros won 21 basketball games and competed in the annual NIT basketball tournament.
