Many San Diego County residents have submitted their votes for the June primaries, but officials say the results will not be immediate.

San Diego County officials say that counting the ballots of over 1.9 million registered voters in the region will take some time. Certified results will not be released until July 7.

Until then, voters can anticipate unofficial results shortly after polls close at 8 p.m. Unofficial results will include mailed ballots received before election day and vote center ballots from early voting between May 28 through June 6.

County officials say this will also include votes for qualified write-in candidates.

Any updates published after the first unofficial report will only include vote center ballots cast on election day. Updates made to mail ballots and write-in candidates will not appear after the first unofficial report.

County officials said the next set of results will have a gap in time due to poll workers packing up supplies and driving in from the county’s 218 vote centers.

“The vote center ballots are scanned upon arrival and results will be periodically updated until all of the vote center ballots have been counted,” the county wrote in a statement.

The Registrar’s office expects to provide less frequent result updates due to fewer vote center locations. Final unofficial election night results will only include ballots that could be immediately counted and may not come until 1 a.m. or later.

Mailed ballots sent right before or on June 7 have a week to arrive if postmarked by Election Day.

Those who missed the May 23 registration deadline can conditionally register on election day and vote provisionally. Provisional ballots are counted once the Registrar has confirmed the voter did not note in another part of the state.

It remains uncertain how many people chose to vote provisionally on election day.

Juval Aguilar, a Chula Vista resident who dropped off his ballots at the Chula Vista City Hall polling center, said community change could only happen by using your voice.

“My vote counts. I’m doing my part as a citizen. We all complain about changes, but we don't do anything about it, or we don't come out to the polls for those changes,” Aguilar said.

Aguilar shared that his family studies the candidates together to make informed decisions on their ballots. As a Chula Vista resident, Aguilar said he wants to see improvements in the conditions of local schools.

“I have daughters in school, and I noticed some West Chula Vista schools are older compared to other schools. That is a change I would like to see because that is where the future starts,” Aguilar said.

He continued, “Just come out here to vote. I got my 22-year-old daughter to vote because it starts with her and the younger generation to get involved,” Agular said.

The next wave of unofficial results will be posted by 5 p.m. on June 9 and additional updates will occur at the discretion of the Registrar of Voters.

According to the county, results must be certified on July 7. All updates will be posted on sdvote.com with the final certified results posted by July 7.
