Qualcomm establishes the naming rights to San Diego State University’s new 35,000 seat stadium located in Mission Valley.

The property has been previously known as San Diego Stadium, Jack Murphy Stadium, Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego County Credit Union Stadium, and now Snapdragon Stadium. On Monday, SDSU officials made the announcement that the site will be named after it's title sponsor Snapdragon.

“We are thrilled to have secured the exclusive naming rights to San Diego State University’s new stadium, Snapdragon Stadium,” Qualcomm CEO and president Cristiano Amon said in Monday’s news release. “Snapdragon stands for premium experiences and leading-edge performance, which is what fans can expect from this new state-of-the-art venue.”

According to officials, Qualcomm paid $45 million for a 15 year deal in naming the stadium. Qualcomm has roots stemming 25 years in Mission Valley as the then-known San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium in 1997 was renamed Qualcomm stadium after a 20 year and $18 million deal for purchase naming rights.

SDSU’s director of athletics John David Wicker said the deal is among the largest in the nation. Snapdragon is a division of Qualcomm, who is San Diego’s premier mobile platform brand. In a news release sent out Monday stated. “It represents a family of technology platforms that bring intelligence and connectivity to smartphones, wearables, always-connected PCs, XR headsets, gaming devices and cars.”

The news release indicated the agreement is still awaiting approval from the California State University Board of Trustees. Most recently known as  the Aztec Stadium, the 132 acre Mission Valley Campus has been under construction since 2018 when San Diego voters passed Measure G. The city of San Diego sold the stadium and property to the university for $86.2 million.

Ground was broken on the new stadium in August of last year, with the final touches expected to be completed on the site by Sept.3, 2022 just in time for SDSU's football opening season against the Arizona Wildcats .
