The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights is back for another year and will celebrate its 50th anniversary during the evening of Dec.12 and Dec 19, bringing more than 100,000 San Diego residents and visitors to the bay.
This long-time tradition begins at 5:30 p.m and is presented by the San Diego Port of San Diego free-of-charge to show over 80 boats decked out in holiday lights, music, and decorations. The theme for this year’s festivities is Twelve Days of Christmas.
“It’ll be great to get back and celebrate the holidays on the water San Diego-style this year,” said Parade Chairman Larry Baumann. “The 12-days of Christmas is a traditional theme with tons of potential for fun and creativity. The kids should enjoy this year’s theme, in particular.”
The parade takes place on two Sundays only. It can be viewed at various routes, including Harbor Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village, the pier on Cesar Chavez Park, the Coronado Bridge, and the Ferry Landing in Coronado to finish.
The route takes approximately two hours to complete. Various prizes and awards are presented to the best-decorated boats and those that best capture the parade’s theme.
The Port of San Diego advises preparing for traffic and parking ahead of time. The public is asked to report any suspicious activity to Harbor Police.
The possession of open alcoholic beverages is prohibited along the parade viewing area. Drones and other unmanned aircraft systems are also prohibited. When attending the event, spectators and participants are asked to comply with San Diego County health guidelines.
