The City of Chula Vista will proudly raise the Juneteenth flag in a special ceremony to commemorate the historic day of June 19, 1865. Juneteenth is a significant holiday that commemorates the emancipation of the last enslaved African-Americans in the United States.

The event will honor the momentous occasion when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and proclaimed that the Civil War had officially ended, granting freedom to the remaining enslaved individuals. Over the decades, Juneteenth has evolved into a joyous celebration of African-American culture and heritage.

This year marks the fourth consecutive year that Chula Vista has raised the Juneteenth flag, emphasizing the city's commitment to recognizing and honoring this important milestone in American history. The Juneteenth flag serves as a powerful symbol of freedom, resilience, and progress.

In observance of this federal holiday, all Chula Vista offices and facilities will be closed on Monday, June 19. The city encourages residents to take part in local Juneteenth events and activities, which serve as opportunities to learn, engage, and celebrate the contributions of African-Americans to our diverse community.

The flag raising ceremony will take place at Chula Vista City Hall, 276 Fourth Avenue and includes speeches, special music and raising of the flag. on Thursday June 15, at 2:15 p.m, and is open to the public.
