Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez confirms that she is stepping down from her leadership role in the 80th Assembly District of San Diego County.
The Assemblywoman went to Twitter Monday afternoon to confirm her decision, expressing gratitude for the experience and honor of serving San Diego residents.
“As a legislator and as a labor leader, my top priority has been to create opportunities that lead to more jobs, better jobs, and better lives for working people,” Gonzalez said Monday afternoon. “It’s been an honor to serve the people of San Diego County and the entire state as a lawmaker who tried to accomplish the most amount of good for the most amount of people.”
San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chairman Nathan Fletcher, who is married to the Assemblywoman, went to Twitter to respond to his wife's decision. The Chairman says the Assemblywoman is leaving big shoes to fill, praising her commitment to the most vulnerable demographics of San Diego County.
"My wife leaves a legacy of accomplishment as a legislator that will not be matched—a fierce fighter for the working class, farmworkers, immigrants, environment, and more," Fletcher said in a tweet.
Assemblywoman Gonzalez says she is resigning from this position to accept a leadership role for the California Labor Federation where she will start this summer. Gonzalez says that in this new role, she will continue to contribute to the lives of the working class not just in San Diego County, but throughout the state of California as well.
"I just announced my resignation from the State Assembly so that I can accept a job with the California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO in preparation for becoming its leader in July," Gonzalez said through her official Twitter account. "This move will allow me to continue my life’s commitment to serve & empower working Californians."
Shortly after Gonzalez announced her decision, Georgette Gomez commented on the Assemblywoman's resignation, announcing that she will be running for the 80th Assembly District on the legacy Lorena Gonzalez has built.
“I’ve been proud to call her my Assemblywoman and excited for her next chapter,” Gomez said. “There’s no one better on this planet to be the next leader of California’s union movement than her. Thank you, Lorena! I’m humbled and excited to announce today my candidacy for State Assembly in the 80th District. I’m running to make a real difference for working families, our environment and build on Assemblywoman Gonzalez’s remarkable legacy.”
