SAN DIEGO, CA.- For their significant contributions to healthcare quality, exemplary leadership, innovation, and equitable access to care and services for Californians, 52 individuals and organizations from San Diego County were recognized by Blue Shield of California Promise Health with the “Leading the Way” 2024 Award.

The event took place on the evening of Thursday, November 21, at the historic El Prado complex in the famous Balboa Park.

Zara Marselian, Director and CEO of La Maestra Community Health Center, proudly holds her award alongside Nate Oubre, Vice President of Performance Optimization at Blue Shield Promise, and Jennifer Schirmer, Vice President of Community Engagement and Expansion at Blue Shield Promise Health.

This was the 2nd Annual Dinner, during which awards were presented to “honorees representing a wide range of healthcare professionals and community organizations recognized for promoting health equity, improving access to care, and ensuring high-quality services.”

Kristen Cerf, President and CEO of Blue Shield Promise Health, added a very human and unique touch to the event. Cerf visited all the tables arranged for the occasion, greeting and conversing briefly with the guests.


“A Significant Difference in Our Communities”

The leader of this successful state health plan, founded in 1939 by the California Medical Association, emphasized during her remarks that “the individuals and organizations we are honoring make a significant difference in our communities and the lives of our Medi-Cal members in San Diego County.”

Cerf further explained the purpose of the awards, held for the second time in this city:
“We recognize them for their vital contributions to those who need our help the most. Their dedication, innovation, and commitment to accessible and equitable care help us fulfill our mission. We couldn’t do it without them,” she said.

Notable Recognitions

“For Their Transformative Role”

One of the most significant awards presented was the Visionary Award, given to the local nonprofit organizations Chicano Federation and La Maestra Community Health Center, in recognition of their “transformative role in serving the community.”

  • Liz Ramírez, Executive Director of the Chicano Federation, expressed:
    “We at Chicano Federation feel deeply honored to receive the Visionary Award from Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan, as this recognition highlights the heart of our mission: strengthening our community by ensuring families have equitable access to health and essential resources.”
  • Zara Marselian, CEO of La Maestra Community Health Center, also expressed her gratitude. This year, she was honored in the Individual Visionary category for her outstanding contributions as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).

“Distinguished Service Award”

  • Karis Grounds (Senior Consultant of Elevation Health Partners)
  • Lourdes Valderrama (Manager of Paradise Family Health Center and Pediatrics in Paradise)

The late Dr. John Malone was posthumously honored, receiving the Distinguished Service Award in memory of his invaluable contributions to the community.
