The establishment of new margins for San Diego County voting districts endorsed the city of Chula Vista along with National City, Imperial Beach, San Ysidro, and Otay as Supervisor Nora Vargas' jurisdiction, but new communities are now being added.
“I am delighted to welcome the East Village communities in downtown San Diego, Golden Hill, South Park, and La Presa to the District 1 family,” Vargas said.
She continued, "this year we begin a new chapter for District 1 with the adoption of new district boundaries by the County's Independent Redistricting Commission."
At the same time, two other communities that Nora Vargas represented during her first year as supervisor are now moving to another district.
“For the residents of Coronado and Point Loma, it has been an honor to serve you,” said Vargas.
She said “although district lines may have changed, my commitment to meeting the needs of all communities remains. Together, we will continue to build healthier and stronger communities.”
San Diego County reported that more than a million residents, or three out of 10, woke up on Saturday in a new supervisorial district.
The county's district boundaries were reviewed by an independent redistricting commission, which worked for a year with public input.
Redistricting, or new geographic voting boundaries, is done every 10 years based on census data, to ensure that voting districts have roughly the same number of people while reflecting "changing populations and demographics."
The new map divides up just one of the county's 18 cities: the city of San Diego, which, with more than 1.38 million people, is too crowded for a single county district. The populations of the new district range in size from 636,285 people in District 2 to 689,991 in District 5.
Supervisor Vargas now represents three communities in the city of San Diego, East Village, San Ysidro, and Otay.
In Supervisor Nora Vargas' district, 61.4 percent of the population identifies as Latino.
Generally, District 1 includes the cities of Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, and National City, portions of the city of San Diego, and unincorporated areas including the communities of Bonita and La Presa, Spring Valley, Sweetwater, and Otay.
