Tuesday is National Margarita Day, the one day for Americans to celebrate the most common tequila-based cocktail.
According to the National Day Calendar, this popular drink is celebrated on Feb.22. Although it is a national favorite, the origins of this drink are unknown, but accounts of it’s inception involve a beautiful woman.
According to National Geographic, the Margarita was first created by Mexican restaurant owner Carlos (Danny) Herrera in 1938 for a Ziegfeld showgirl Marjorie King, who allegedly was allergic to all forms of alcohol except tequila and didn't like to drink the spirit straight.
Herrera allegedly added lime and salt, creating the world's first margarita.
The Smithsonian Magazine reported other claims of the drink’s inception, including the Texas socialite Margarita Sames, who first mixed one up at a house party in Acapulco in 1948.
Other accounts involve actress Rita Hayworth, whose real name was Margarita Cansino, who was offered one by an admiring bartender during a theater gig in Tijuana in the 1940s.
Regardless of the drink's origins, local restaurants prepare for it as it is one of the most popular national food holidays.
