The price of gasoline in the country is now the highest in history, according to American Automobile Association (AAA), but although California has the most expensive fuel, in Chula Vista, it is still possible to get gas for about $5 per gallon.

According to AAA, gasoline in California is the most expensive in the entire country. A gallon of regular fuel was selling for an average price Tuesday of $5.44 per gallon in California, that's $1.31 above the national average.

In San Diego County, it is sold even slightly more expensive, at $5.48 per gallon on average.

Yet, in Chula Vista, there is still one membership store on H Street with gas for $5.09 a gallon, according to various search engines.

An employee told Chula Vista Today that "the current reflects what we have in the tank, but when we refill the tank, we will buy it more expensive and unfortunately also at sell more expensively to the public."

He estimated that gasoline at that price could last one to two days, depending on demand.

Only one other gas station in Chula Vista had gas for sale below the average price for California and San Diego on Tuesday, an outlet on Telegraph Canyon Road. The price in the rest of the stores was around $5.67 per gallon of regular fuel.

The price of gasoline, which was already more than a dollar higher locally than in the rest of the country, began to rise since Russia started to invade Ukraine but has soared in recent days.

The AAA warned that prices would continue to rise for the duration of the Russian war in Ukraine.

"As the conflict continues, oil markets are likely to respond by raising the price of crude oil to reflect an increased risk of disruption to scarce global oil supplies this week," AAA said.

He also warned that "total national crude stocks decreased by 2.6 million barrels last week; the current level of stocks is approximately 15 percent lower than at the end of February 2021, which contributes to the pressure on domestic crude prices."
