The San Diego Loyal are indeed staying loyal to their early success in the season.
On Sunday night, the local San Diego soccer club defeated Sacramento 2-0 at home.
The Torero Stadium witnessed the hometown team claim their second consecutive victory after two goals by Kyle Adams and Charlie Adams were scored by half-time, along with a good performance by Loyal goalkeeper Koke Vegas.
The victory is good on paper, but for those in attendance, including head coach Landon Donovan, this victory wasn't as neat as it could have been.
However, Donovan says that these type of games must be won despite rocky performances like the one he saw Sunday night.
“We weren’t great tonight, to be honest. Games like that last year we were losing,” Donovan said after the game. “The part I am proud of is the pure completing and doing whatever it takes to win a game.” he added.
The head coach and American soccer legend praised Kyle for putting the ball behind the net in this match, and for his overall effort in walking away from Torero stadium with a victory.
“Kyle is doing everything right. He just rewarded himself with a goal,” he said. “He did a lot of things for the team tonight to help us win in the end. I was really proud of him.”
Coach Donovan also praised Spanish goalkeeper Koke Vegas for his multiple saves in this match, and also says that his calming persence reflects in the confidence of the team since he became a starter on the team.
“Koke is growing. This is the first time he’s been a real starter in his career, so there are going to be ups and downs moments, but I thought he did very good tonight. He made every play we needed him to make, and more than that, he was just a calming presence,” Donavan said on Vegas. “Any dicey play that came, he just made the play and calmed everyone down.”
The San Diego Loyal are now sitting secind place within the Western Conference of the USL Championship, and will play at Torero Stadium again on April 3 against El Paso Locomotive.
