Artwork from youth will be showcased at Envision Broadway and Spring Art Walk in Chula Vista on April 23, centering on the theme of a “safe and healthy” community.
Presented by the Institute for Public Strategies at the Chula Vista Center, located at 555 Broadway, the Spring Art Walk will showcase pieces from kindergarten to high school, along with adults that reflect a safe and healthy Broadway community without the dangers of underage drinking, vaping, cannabis use, and methamphetamine use. The event will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the upper-level open space near the AMC Theatre.
"We wanted to create an event and local celebration that encourages our children and neighbors to envision a Broadway-area community they want to see in the future," said Jovita Arellano, Program Manager for the Institute for Public Strategies. "We want to engage with our children specifically about what makes our community healthy and safe and the impacts of substance abuse. Creative expression of their vision through art is one of the best ways young people can communicate," she added.
Arellano further commented that "research shows that cities that emphasize art have a more civic and social engagement, better child welfare, and lower poverty rates.”
Students from Sweetwater School District, Chula Vista Elementary District, and several private schools in the south bay will participate in the Art Walk. Local teachers encouraged all children to submit an entry for display and competition. The theme for the Youth Contest coincides with the observance of Alcohol awareness month.
"We are thrilled to open up our space at Chula Vista Center for this inspirational and empowering community event," said Chula Vista Center Senior General Manager Ramon Oseguera.
Winning participants of the contests may see cash prizes and gift cards from $50 to $100 in various categories, including ages 5-10, 11-13, 14-18, and 19 and above.
Mariachi and Ballet Folklorico groups will perform throughout the day, and Chula Vista Center dining tenants will offer various food specials.
