Authorities arrested a transient man suspected of shooting a 57-year-old man in the chest with a ghost shotgun during an argument late Thursday in Chula Vista.

Cesar Alvarenga Carrillo, 42, allegedly opened fire near Otay Valley Regional Park, severely injuring the victim, whose name was not released, according to police. The shooting occurred outside the victim’s motorhome in the 500 block of Shinohara Lane shortly before 11:30 p.m.

According to Sgt. Anthony Molina, paramedics took the victim to the hospital, where he was admitted in critical but stable condition.

The shooter had fled on foot, and officers surrounded the area to locate him, according to Molina.

The suspect was apprehended without incident a few blocks away from the shooting site. The cause of the shooting remains unclear, although the two men apparently knew each other and had been involved in an ongoing dispute, according to police.

“Carrillo did not provide a statement,” Molina said.

Carrillo was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of attempted murder. He was being held without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

Police do not believe there are any outstanding suspects.
