A man was struck by a car while jaywalking a Chula Vista street Saturday night and was rushed to a local hospital with major injuries, police said.
A man drinking a beer was jaywalking on the 200 block of Broadway near E street at about 8:30 p.m.when he was struck by a male driver, according to OnScene T.V.
Authorities rushed the victim to a local hospital with major injuries. OnScene T.V. reported the pedestrian’s breaking slowed dramatically as they took him to the hospital.
Chula Vista Police Lt. Scott Atkins said the driver was cooperative and stayed with the pedestrian, reported the San Diego Union-Tribune. Video footage of the incident shows the passenger side windshield of a Black Chevrolet Cobalt LS sustained damage due to the impact.
Jaywalking is the act of crossing a road somewhere other than at a designated crosswalk. Jaywalking is illegal in California and can result in a fine of up to $250 for the guilty party.
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, about 7,904 pedestrians died in traffic or non-traffic incidents in 2020. The latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that in 2020 6,516 pedestrians died in traffic crashes occurring on public roads.
