San Diego Police on Tuesday arrested two people in connection with the fatal shooting of a Chula Vista man in the Logan Heights area.

Police identified the victim as 30-year-old Devin Payton, who succumbed to a gunshot wound to the chest at around 2:49 p.m. in the 2200 block of Imperial Avenue, according to San Diego Police Department Lt. Steve Shebloski.

According to SDPD, the victim and 27-year-old Torrodney Prevot had a verbal altercation in the parking lot on Imperial Avenue. During that altercation, Prevot allegedly walked away and retrieved a handgun from his vehicle.

“The argument escalated to a point where the suspect took out a handgun and shot the victim at least one time, fatally striking him in the chest,” Lt. Shebloski wrote in a statement.

Responding officers called for paramedics upon arriving at the scene and performed lifesaving until they arrived. Paramedics transported Payton to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 3:29 a.m, police said,

Police said investigators found Prevot and Anthony Deshaun Word, a 22-year- old Houston resident at a residence in the 1800 block of State Street near the Harborview neighborhood.

Prevot was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, and Word was arrested on suspicion of being an accessory to the crime.

Both suspects were taken into custody without incident, police said.
