A 56-year-old male inmate at the George Bailey Detention Center was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday and died due to unknown conditions, the San Diego Sheriff's Department announced.
According to the county sheriff’s department, the man’s cellmate alerted deputies via the intercom.
Deputies and medical staff immediately responded and provided medical aid to the man. Paramedics arrived and continued CPR until he was transported to a hospital for treatment, but he did not survive.
He was pronounced deceased at 2:35 p.m.
Identifying information about the man was not released.
The Sheriff's Homicide Unit responded to investigate the incident. According to the Sheriff's Department, the cause and manner of death are still under investigation.
The Medical Examiner's Office has been notified of the death. An autopsy is scheduled for Sept.14.
