Nine stops were added onto the Metropolitan Transit System’s UC San Diego Blue line and will be open to the public on Sunday.
MTS and SANDAG are hosting a Grand Opening Celebration in commemoration of it’s opening on Nov. 21 from 11 a.m to 3 p.m at the new UC San Diego Central Campus Location. Presentations will take place by federal, state and local officials who made this project happen. The public may participate in giveaways, games and activities for kids and live music. Free food and giveaways will be available until supplies last.
It has been in the works for approximately 20 years, and now there are 11 miles added onto the line, including north of Old Town, connections to UTC and the San Ysidro Border. The project was $2.17 billion. According to SANDAG Director of Engineering Sharon Humphreys, city leaders fell $13 million under the budget.
Services for the newly expanded trolley line will begin on Sunday, Nov.21 at 5 a.m and services will be free system-wide. Event attendees can take advantage of free Park & Ride lots throughout the MTS system to attend the Trolley event.
Attendees of the Mid-Coast Grand Opening Celebration are encouraged to RSVP on the SDMTS website.
