A vehicle speeding down Plaza Bonita Rd Monday morning veered off the roadway and into the Sweetwater River Channel, which ignited the surrounding vegetation. 

A male driver was speeding southbound on Plaza Bonita Rd at approximately 9:45 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the Sweetwater River Channel, also known as “the Jungle”. According to OnSceneT.V., who first reported the incident, the car landed near a homeless encampment and ignited the surrounding vegetation. 

According to National City Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Krepps, crews found the driver uninjured and worked to extinguish the surrounding thick vegetation.  

The department brought in a helicopter to obtain a better visual of the incident and to utilize its water-dropping capabilities, Keeps said. The nearby homeless encampments were not impacted by the incident despite their proximity.  

No injuries were reported, and DUI is not suspected.
