The Chula Vista Police Department is investigating a mass casualty incident that hospitalized four juveniles after a Honda they occupied lost control and veered off Otay Lakes Road.
A witness told police that the driver of the Honda was heading in his direction at nearly 90 mph at approximately 9:53 p.m.as he was heading eastbound on Otay Lakes Rd E, according to On Scene T.V.The witness avoided the incident, but saw the vehicle veer off the roadway and colliding into a guardrail and a wooden fence near Avenida Del Rey.
A total of four female and three male juveniles were inside the vehicle when it burst into flames. According to OnScene T.V., four of them were unconscious, while three were conscious and pulling the others out through the window.
The witness called for help, and fire authorities extinguished the fire upon arrival. All occupants of the vehicle were treated, and the unconscious juveniles regained consciousness.
Four ambulances transported four of the juveniles, who were transported to Mercy Hospital and Rady’s Children’s Hospital. One male sustained a broken arm from the incident.
According to OnScene T.V, the driver of the vehicle, who was found walking down the street after the incident was detained and brought back to the crash scene.
It is not immediately clear whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.
