The Allgire Foundation hosted its second-annual smiles for a miles community event to assemble more than 15,000 care packages for San Diego County residents who live in adorable housing communities.
Smiles for miles began to combat food insecurity, which is at an all-time high, according to Scott Silber, Executive Director of Allgire Foundation. More than 250 volunteers gathered at the Allgire General Contractors (AGC) headquarters in Carlsbad.
“With inflation going through the roof, this small care package might bring a smile to someone’s face, give them a little bit of a boost, some food on their table for just a couple of meals,” Silber said.
According to the San Diego Hunger Coalition 1 in 4 people in San Diego County face nutrition insecurity and are unable to provide three meals a day for themselves or their families.
The volunteers represent various industries dedicated to the development and management of affordable housing communities, including professionals from the design, engineering, and contractor industries.
The care packages will include 12 different easy-to-consume non-perishable items such as noodles, peanut butter, packages of nuts and trail mix, granola bars, cookies, and popcorn.
The packages will be delivered all over the next 30-45 days. Silber said the Allgire foundation will be delivering these care packages to families and individuals who live in affordable housing communities throughout the San Diego County region during the months of November and December.
The Allgire Foundation will be able to reach 15,000 low-income residents, which is a 50% increase from 2021 when Allgire Foundation donated 10,000-holiday care packages.
