The name of the knife-wielding man fatally shot by a Chula Vista Police Officer Sunday night in a shopping center parkinglot was released by authorities, along with the officer's identity.
According to an investigation by the San Diego Police Department, CVPD officer Alfonso Perdomo fatally shot 32-year-old Bradley Munroe on the evening of Dec. 18 as the resident approached him with a knife in hand.
Perdomo had told Munroe to drop the knife, but he did not comply, according to authorities.
Perdomo has been employed by the Chula Vista Police Department for approximately five years and is currently assigned as a canine handler.
According to SDPD Lt. Jud Campbell, the Chula Vista Police Department recieved a radio call reporting a female screaming for help and a male hitting a female in the 1000 block of Broadway. As police responded, callers, identified the man as wearing a white t-shirt and grey sweatpants, walking with a wheelchair, and hitting cars with his hands and parts of the wheelchair.
Perdomo arrived at the scene and located Munroe standing next to a parked black pickup truck, but noticed he was holding a knife. Munroe climbed into the bed of the pickup truck and attempted to break in before jumping out and approaching the officer, despite being told to stop.
Munroe was shot several times and died at the scene.
The investigation later revealed that the woman in the initial radio call is related to Munroe and she is not believed to be a victim of a crime.
The San Diego Police Department is investigating the shooting as a part of a Countywide Memorandum of Understanding. The SDPD”s Homicide Unit is conducting the investigation, which will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s office to determine whether the officer had any criminal liability for his actions.
The Chula Vista Police Department will conduct an administrative investigation into the officers’ discharge of their firearms. The Federal Bureau of Investigations and the United States Attorney’s Office will also be monitoring the investigation.
