Taxpayers in California can expect to receive inflation relief payments starting next month for up to $1,050.
The Middle-Class Tax Refund is a one-time payment to provide relief to eligible Californians who filed their 2020 tax return. How much your receive depends on your income, filing status, and household size.
According to the California Franchise Tax Board, eligible taxpayers will automatically receive a payment between October 2022 and January 2023. If you filed electronically and received your 2020 tax refund by direct deposit, then the Middle-Class Tax Refund should be delivered similarly. Otherwise, the payment will be delivered on a debit card.
The refunds are a part of a nearly $12 billion relief effort approved by lawmakers. State officials estimate about 23 million Californians will receive a payment.
According to the FTB, you are eligible if you:
- Filed your 2020 tax return by October 15, 2021
- Meet the California adjusted gross income (CA AGI) limits described in the What you may receive section
- Were not eligible to be claimed as a dependent in the 2020 tax year
- Were a California resident for six months or more of the 2020 tax year
- Are a California resident on the date the payment is issued
Visit the State’s Franchise Tax Board website to determine the payment amount you may receive.
