On Tuesday, the Chula Vista City Council selected ten finalists to interview for the District 3 vacancy after Councilmember Steve Padilla successfully ran for California Senate on November 8, 2022, to represent District 18.
City Councilmembers made nominations from the qualified applicants, narrowing the list from 17 to 10 for an in-person interview during the Jan. 24 City Council meeting. Council members will make an appointment at the same meeting.
The finalists are listed below in alphabetical order by last name:

· Devonna Almagro
· Griselda Delgado
· David Diaz
· Gian Ghio
· Alonso Gonzalez
· Victor Lopez
· Daniel Rice (Vazquez)
· Sophia Rodriguez
· Tanya Williams
The interviews can last about 20 minutes per candidate. The city council will decide on questions prior to the city council meeting to consistently ask each candidate.
According to City Clerk Kerry Bigalow, public comment will be allowed before and after the interviews to allow maximum public comment.
During Tuesday’s meeting, some residents expressed disappointment toward the council for not allowing voters to elect someone. The Chula Vista Municipal code has established an appointment process to fill City Council vacancies.
The City Council meeting on Jan.24 is scheduled to start at 5 P.M.
