On October 15, Chula Vista officially welcomed new members to its Boards and Commissions during a City Council meeting, marking a significant moment for civic engagement in the community.
Sanja Jing and Giancarlo Ruiz were sworn in to serve on the Cultural Arts Commission, Gerardo Contreras joined the Housing and Homelessness Advisory Commission, and Johnnie Welborne III was appointed to the Parks and Recreation Commission. These individuals will play critical roles in shaping policies that impact the city and its residents.
Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria to serve on most of Chula Vista’s boards and commissions. Members must be at least 18 years old and live within city limits, though non-residents may be appointed under special circumstances outlined in the City Charter. In addition to voting members, some commissions offer non-voting positions, such as youth advisory seats, encouraging broader community participation.
Several commissions, including the Board of Library Trustees and the Civil Service Commission, have vacancies for those interested in getting involved. Even if there are no current openings, eligible applications are kept on file for a year, ensuring a continuous opportunity for civic participation.
The swearing-in of these new members underscores the dedication of Chula Vista residents to public service. It highlights the city’s ongoing commitment to fostering active citizenship and diverse representation in local governance.
