Chula Vista Police Department K9 Jax has officially retired from his days of patrolling the streets with his human partner and will move on to leisurely days filled with belly rubs, playtime, and endless snacks.

K-9 Jax, the 7-year-old Belgian Malinois, has been on patrol for four years, and has aided in arresting many criminals while on patrol in Chula Vista. He was a part of the seven dogs at the Chula Vista Police Department, 6 of which are on patrol and one specializes in narcotics.

“I’m honored to have been a K9 handler with CVPD and to have worked with such a great dog like Jax,” said CVPD Agent Brian Olson in a Public Statement.

Agent Olson was paired up with K-9 Jax in January of 2019 and hit the streets in March, according to the CVPD. Agent Olson now has the option to adopt Jax.

The Chula Vista Police Department K-9 unit was founded in 1977 within the department’s Patrol Division. The primary function of the K-9 (police dog) is to help police officers find and arrest dangerous wanted offenders while keeping the officers and community safe,

“This is possible because each police dog has an incredible sense of smell. The dog can follow the scent of an offender and as a result, they are able to help police officers make an arrest,” reads the CVPD website.

K-9 dogs often participate in the community by performing educational seminars and demonstrations at our local schools, special events, safety fairs, and other community meetings.
