Inspired by nostalgia for the iconic flavors and aromas of Mexican street food, brothers Saúl and Ricardo Álvarez have brought a slice of Mexico to Chula Vista with their taquería, El Pastor de Rica. Located at the corner of Halsey and Broadway, the restaurant offers a menu brimming with classic tacos al pastor, suadero, chorizo, carnaza, asada, and even delicacies like tripe, tongue, and cheek.
“This was my wife’s idea,” said Ricardo Álvarez during the bustling opening night on Thursday. “She believed in the potential of starting a business like this. We opened our first taquería in Guadalajara years ago, and now we’re here in Chula Vista to bring Mexicans’ favorite tacos to this community.”
As hundreds of eager customers lined up to try the variety of tacos and refreshing aguas frescas, the staff worked tirelessly to fulfill orders. Inside the taquería, customers could admire décor paying homage to Mexican icons like revolutionary Francisco Villa and renowned painter Frida Kahlo.
“Our goal is to bring great tacos to the people of Chula Vista and the United States. We love tacos just like everyone else, and we want to offer authentic Mexican tacos here,” Ricardo explained. “The plan is to open more locations in the area and eventually expand across the country.”
Adding star power to the grand opening, Mexican boxing champion Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez joined his brothers, personally serving tacos to the first customers. Days before the opening, Chula Vista Mayor John McCann visited the taquería, posing for a photo with the Álvarez brothers and inviting the community to attend the event via social media.
