The F.D.A. authorizes an underwear that protects against sexually transmitted infections from a woman's genital.
The Food and Drug Administration confirmed the approval recently, with the intention of keeping individuals and couples safe from catching an S.T.I. in particular during any oral sexual activity,
“The F.D.A.’s authorization of this product gives people another option to protect against S.T.I.s during oral sex,” said Courtney Lias, director of the Food and Drug Administration office that conducted the underwear review.
Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo, director of the division of infectious diseases at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, says that this comes as a relief, especially as she worries even more so for teenagers who generally initiate their sexual experiences orally.
“Oral sex is not totally risk-free,” Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo emphasized, “…teenagers are initiating their first sexual activity with oral sex.”
“I was just so discouraged,” said Cristol. “I wanted to feel sexy and confident and use something that was made with my body and actual sex in mind.”
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention., infections such as herpes, syphilis and gonorrhea can be caught during the act of oral sex.
This approval by the F.D.A. becomes the first for any underwear products involving the prevention of sexually transmitted disease.
