Throughout San Diego Bay this morning, volunteers from port tenant businesses, the Port of San Diego and the military will work together to clear trash and debris from San Diego Bay and its shorelines.
Operation Clean Sweep is an annual event, which removes around 20,000 tons of trash and debris from San Diego Bay. This includes dozens of shopping carts, discarded bicycles, mattresses, household appliances, and other items.
Many of these items are underwater and are recovered by volunteer civilian and military divers.
"Because of the hard work of dedicated tenants and volunteers, San Diego Bay's environment has greatly improved over the years,'' a statement from the port reads.
Cleanup will begin at 8:30 a.m. at multiple locations:
— Pepper Park, 3299 Tidelands Ave., National City;
— Marina View Park, 900 Marina Parkway, Chula Vista;
— Coronado Yacht Club, 1631 Strand Way, Coronado;
— Half Moon Marina, 2323 Shelter Island Drive, San Diego;
— Barrio Logan at California Marine Cleaning, 2049 Main St., San Diego;
— Chollas Creek at Pacific Ship Repair, 1625 Rigel St., San Diego;
