A San Diego Nonprofit organization rescued more than 100 dogs from a breeder in Mexico.

The La Mesa-based dog rescue organization, The Animal Pad (TAP) shared on social media their harrowing experience of rescuing 111 doodles from heinous conditions from a breeder in Mexico. The organization said it received word of a situation in Baja that had gone “horribly wrong” and the breeder was willing to work with rescues, but on her terms.

“We were, to our knowledge, the only rescue that was invited inside to remove dogs. We were given the dogs she called “ugly” and “weirdos,” TAP wrote in a social media post.

Several doodle mixes were rescued, including Labradoodles, goldendoodles, bernedoodles, and ausiedoodles, all kept in unhealthy conditions. TAP said they were cooperating with the breeder while simultaneously working on a plan to get every dog out.

“They were killing each other and dog bones and skulls were seen around the property. There was abuse, which we caught on tape. Dogs were whipped with leashes and hit with buckets and it took EVERYTHING in us to not lose it. Team members were running out to our van to cry because it was all too much. But, for the sake of the dogs, we kept it together and said we wouldn’t rest until every last one was safe,” TAP wrote in a statement.

The breeder was eventually arrested and taken to jail in Mexico, and that same night, roughly a group of 15 volunteers went to the property to remove the dogs.

“We cried for those we loaded into our cars, knowing that for them, it was finally over. We were unable to secure all the dogs because many are so severely undersocialized and were hiding in caves they had dug out on the property,” the organization described in the Facebook post.

Anyone interested in fostering a dog is asked to visit  theanimalpad.org/foster and fill out a foster application.

"These dogs are incredibly special and above all, we are looking for people who want to HELP a dog in need— not just because they look pretty. If you’ve read the above, are a patient and understanding soul and still are Team Doodle, I can tell you that you won’t find any better than these guys. They are going to take work, but they will bond hard. Helping a grateful dog like this is the most rewarding thing on the planet, and becoming their person is the honor of a lifetime," the organization wrote.
