Two teenagers sustained severe injuries early Monday morning after being involved in a solo roll-over collision in Imperial Beach, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s office.
First responders extricated two minors from within the wreckage in front of 740 Palm Avenue and were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries in an ambulance. According to witnesses, a dark 2018 Toyota RAV-4 was traveling eastbound on Palm Avenue at a high rate of speed when it lost control just west of State Route 75 and Palm Avenue.
Witnesses told authorities that the vehicle’s wheels struck the south-curb line and lost control, causing the vehicle to roll over several times across the city-landscaped vegetation, hitting several light posts before stopping. The vehicle landed westbound in front of 740 Palm Avenue of the eastbound lanes.
According to San Diego Sheriff’s Sergeant Robert Posada, a pedestrian bystander came to assist in extracting a female occupant from within the vehicle wreckage responding Fire Personnel used the "Jaws of Life" to extricate the male driver, who is also a minor.
No alcohol was determined to be involved in the collision, but speed is considered to be a contributing factor.
Sheriff's Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) team was requested to the scene to assist in this accident investigation. Investigators believe the driver may have struck a bicyclist, but could not locate them in the immediate area.
