The Ambulance Transport System has saved residents an average of $1,000 per transport only six months into its service, “exceeding” expectations of the Chula Vista Fire Department.

In the CVFD’s update of the program’s metrics to the Chula Vista city council, Fire Chief Harry Muns announced that since April 2021, the Ambulance Transport System averaged 52 ambulance transports daily, providing cost-effective and improved response time ambulance services spanning across Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and Bonita.

Ambulance response times have improved by 7.5 percent from the previous transport provider as they are required to respond to calls within 12 minutes 90 percent of the time. The CVFD response time is 95.6 percent for advanced life support calls which include those with IV therapy, medication administration and other advanced cardiac care. Basic life support calls including extremity fractures, uncontrolled bleeding or stable patients with other injuries or other medical issues compose 98.2 percent of calls.

Each of the 10 ambulances in the city are housed in CVFD fire stations and are fully staffed by paramedic and emergency technicians.

Each ambulance unit is staffed by paramedics and emergency technicians and are fully equipped with a Mobile Data Communications screen, allowing crews to see details of 9-1-1 calls including a map. An autoloader charges the gurney and allows for easier patient entry and exit.
