The Del Mar Racetrack, founded by the Thoroughbred Club and led by Bing Crosby, was inaugurated in 1937 and has been the site of the annual San Diego County Fair, known as the Del Mar Fair, from 1984 to 2001.
Before the Del Mar Racetrack was built, Southern Californians traveled to Tijuana’s Agua Caliente racetrack for drinking, gambling, and fun. Los Angeles residents, in particular, frequented the spot to get around the prohibition era. It became a popular spot for celebrities and wealthy locals who got used to the short trip across the border.
