San Diego is in for an artistic treat as “Illustrating Spain in the US” brings its renowned comic strips to life through an exciting exhibition at Sparks Gallery. This captivating project explores the presence and lasting impact of Spain in the United States, combining the artistic brilliance of Spanish comic artists with the insights of history experts.

The exhibition beautifully portrays the living diaspora of Spanish individuals intricately tied to the American experience, focusing on seven facets of the influential Spanish heritage that has left an indelible mark on American history and culture. Guided by advisors like Michael Francis, Eduardo Garrigues, James Fernández, Luis Argeo, Lucía Cotarelo Esteban, Juan Pimentel, Estrella de Diego, and Dolores Jiménez Blanco, the comic book creators enrich their narratives with expert knowledge.

Curated by the esteemed Ana Merino, the exhibition features captivating illustrations that bring to life various aspects of Spain’s presence in the United States:

  • Sergio García and Lola Moral’s vibrant tapestry showcases San Agustín, Las Misiones, and the Camino Real.
  • Rayco Pulido pays homage to Bernardo de Gálvez and his pivotal role in the American War of Independence.
  • Ana Penyas and Seisdedos portray untold stories of Spanish immigration, filled with nostalgia and separation from their origins.
  • Anapurna’s poetic comic celebrates the strength of Hispanism.
  • Mireia Pérez delves into the brilliant minds of Spanish scientists who made significant
    breakthroughs on American soil.
  • Carla Berrocal applauds the passionate soul of Spaniards in Hollywood, showcasing their
    indomitable spirit.

“Illustrating Spain in the US” is presented by the Cultural Office of Spain in Washington, D.C., in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes in LA.
