Chairwoman Nora Vargas takes initiative in handling cross border pollution that is persistent in the Tijuana River Valley area.

Recently, Chairwoman Vargas began distribution of free air purifiers to locals who have been affected by the constant odors coming from the area.

The distribution involves the distribution of BlueAir Blue Pure 311i Max air purifiers, which operates to effectively filter out odors that derives from pollution crisis. In comparison to a common lightbulb, these EnergyStar-rated units utilizes less energy to provide instant and efficient impact on affected households.

The Chairwoman says that this distribution program is only the beginning of a future where local residents will be provided immediate relief in the midst of this environmental issue in the South Bay.

“Our families have been living with the severe impacts of pollution for far too long, and providing these air purifiers is a crucial step to help improve their daily lives,” said Chairwoman Nora Vargas. “While we work to secure more air purifiers for our communities, this pilot program marks our initial effort to provide immediate relief, as we continue to work with federal, state, and local partners on long-term, permanent solutions. This is another step forward in my commitment to tackling the biggest environmental and social justice crisis of our lifetime.”

Chairwoman Vargas has been a long-time advocate of tackling environmental issues, particularly the public health impacts caused by the pollution crisis in the Tijuana River Valley.

Previously, the Chairwoman submitted a public health request to the CDC(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and the CDPH(California Department of Public Health) to look into the local impact regarding cross-border pollution.
