A Covid-19 Dia de los Muertos Altar was constructed to remember community members who have died at the hands of the illness for the second consecutive year at the San Diego County Administrative Center.

Organized by San Diego County Vice Chair Nora Vargas, supervisor of District 1, in partnership with San Diego Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, and Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, the altar will remain on display until Tuesday, where the county will mark the end of the holiday with an official ceremony at 6:30 p.m.

“One of the things about Dia de los Muertos in our community is that it is a day of celebration. A day of remembering our families and those who we love and those who we care for and so what we wanted to do today is honor them. The celebration starts today,” Vargas said.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 4,000 COVID-19 deaths have been reported in San Diego County.

The day of the dead, or commonly known as Dia de los Muertos is a multi-day holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and parts of Latin America in honor of those who've passed.

Approximately 100 photos were sent in by family members to be placed on an altar dressed in marigolds, food and water.
