San Diego Gas and Electric warns all of it's 43,276 customers of a potential a Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) over Thanksgiving.
San Diego County issued a fire weather watch that will be in effect from 4 a.m on Thursday to 6 p.m on Friday in mountains and valley areas. According to the National Weather Service, this is due to Santa Ana winds, above average temperature and extremely low relative humidity.
"Weather conditions change, and we have our team of professionals watching closely. However, we wanted to let our customers know as early as possible that they could be impacted so they can make alternate holiday arrangements if needed," SDG&E chief safety officer Kevin Geraghty said in a written statement.
The exact number of customers that will be affected by a potential PSPS remains unclear. Residents that may be impacted by the shut offs may be notified via phone, text message or email. A list of impacted areas will be updated here where people may also monitor shut downs. SDG&E recently released a PSPS app that will update customers of any changes.
Residents may follow these safety tips provided by SDG&E in the event of a power outage:
- Use a flashlight rather than a candle for light.
- If using a standby generator follow these safety tips.
- Turn off major appliances like dishwashers or A/C that were running when the power went out.
- Unplug or turn off TVs, stereos or game systems.
- Leave one light on so you know when power is restored
Maintain these supplies on hand:
- A flashlight with a supply of fresh batteries.
- A portable battery-powered radio so you can keep up with the news.
- A telephone that does not depend on electricity. Cordless phones will not function during an outage.
- A supply of easy-to-prepare, nonperishable foods. This includes packaged snacks and bottled water and juices.
- A wind-up or battery-operated clock.
- A first-aid kit.
- A manual can opener.
