A second alarm fire caused the death of a man in his 80’s, and the displacement of many people at an Imperial Beach apartment building.

Authorities say the fire in the 500 block of 7th Street is under investigation by the San Diego Sheriff's Department Bomb/Arson unit. Crews arrived at the scene at about 5:20 a.m. when the fire expanded from the laundry room to the second story that trapped some people, according to the Chula Vista Police Department.

One person needed to be extracted from the second floor which was engulfed in flames. The Sheriff's Department announced that a man did not survive after firefighters pulled the man out and attempted CPR. The man has not yet been identified.

The fire displaced eight adults and two children, according to a CVPD spokesperson.

On Monday, investigators announced they don't believe the fire is suspicious or criminal in nature.

This investigation is ongoing and the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
