San Diego County officials identified the man fatally struck along state Route 54 Thursday as 22-year-old David Post II.

According to authorities, Post was struck Thursday at about 5:50 p.m. while changing the right front tire of his blue Toyota Scion. He parked his car in the center median near the Chula Vista Mobile Home Park and KOA resort, along eastbound lanes of state Route 54 east of Highland Avenue.

Authorities say that a Mazda switched lanes and hit the right tire of Post’s car, which pushed the Toyota Scion forward and caused Post to land in the middle of the road. The San Diego County Medical Examiners' office said Post was transported to a hospital, where he died.

The driver of the Mazda stopped nearby and cooperated with investigators. The California Highway Patrol said alcohol and drugs were not believed to be factors in the incident.

The cause of the collision and sequence of events remains under investigation.

Post, a San Diego resident, was a semi-professional football player for the Silverbacks.

“As a football team, family, and community, we mourn the tragic loss of life of our dear nephew, brother, and teammate,” the Silverbacks wrote in a statement. “Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Dave. As we struggle to return to normalcy we will celebrate his life with all the good memories we have shared.”

Co-owner of the team, Lisa Limbrik, organized a GoFundMe to help “lighten the burden on the family of any financial responsibilities they may come across”

“Words cannot express the tremendous grief the San Diego Silverback family is experiencing over the tragedy of his passing,” the Silverbacks wrote. “As his unfortunate passing has caused severe distress and grief, we are trying to lighten the burden on the family of any financial responsibilities they may come across. In an effort to help the family, the Silverbacks are asking you to please donate what you can. Every bit helps.”
