The average for California's gasoline prices reached record breaking height of $4.676 a gallon for regular unleaded gasoline on Sunday, according to American Automotive Association.

Despite this spike, the national average slightly dropped to $3.413. San Diego County currently sees an average of $4.626 as of Sunday, making it the highest since Oct. 17, 2012.

The demand for crude oil outgrew supply which raises prices by the barrel and this cost is then transferred to customers. According to AAA, heavy rainstorms in Northern California limited production capacity which trickled down to Southern California.
