The collection of black garbage containers will be carried out normally beginning Jan.3, according to Chula Vista City Manager Maria Kachadoorian.

However, it is possible that recyclables will only be collected this week with the ongoing strike among Republic Services sanitation workers. The city manager reported that garden and organic waste, which is deposited in green containers, will not be collected.

The collection of black garbage bin waste will resume to regular collection in commercial units and multi-family apartments in Chula Vista, according to Kachadoorian. She explained that collection of garbage from housing units experienced delays due to containers being overrun.

This is in addition to the accumulation of waste from the holidays since garbage collection had not passed last week. Although the collection of recyclables from the blue containers is possible, it will not be safe according to city officials.

“We are working with Republic Services to bring back all regularly scheduled services as soon as possible. In the meantime, recycling, yard waste, and Christmas trees can be taken to the Otay landfill for disposal at no cost to Chula Vista residents, ”Kachadoorian said.

City officials advise Chula Vista residents facing a "critical problem regarding garbage accumulation" should contact Republic Waste at 619-421-9400.

Meanwhile, the work stoppage of unionized waste pickers continues at Republic Services and Teamsters Local Union 542. County Supervisor Nora Vargas and Assemblywoman Lorena González Fletcher of San Diego have expressed their support for the striking workers.

Republic Services Sanitation workers and members of Teamsters Local 542 in San Diego walked off the job on Dec.17 to call for better working conditions. They have addressed workplace safety concerns, excessive labor, harassment and wages, and have had multiple failed mediation sessions with the Phoenix-based company.
