An 18 year-old man was arrested for allegedly beating his grandmother to death with a baseball bat in a Chula Vista residence on Tuesday afternoon.

The Chula Vista Police Department (CVPD) patrol officers responded to a call at approximately 1 p.m. referencing the attack in the 1500 block of Melrose Avenue.

Officers went into the residence and located the suspect’s 62 year-old grandmother, Diana Diaz, “in another bedroom with serious signs of trauma on her body”, CVPD Lt. Dan Peak said.

Both officers and paramedics attempted life-saving measures.

Diaz was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Officers located the suspect later identified as Adrian Gutierrez standing in the living room upon arrival, according to Peak. The suspect then ran from officers and barricaded himself inside of a bedroom, arming himself with a knife.

A short standoff took place inside the residence, but officers negotiated with Gutierrez who eventually surrendered to officers without incident, according to Peak.

Gutierrez was later booked into San Diego County Jail for murder.

An additional uninjured resident was also located in the house by officers and escorted to safety.

“The investigation is still on-going but has been able to determine Gutierrez has suffered from past mental health issues. During witness questioning, investigators also learned Diaz reported being attacked by her grandson with a baseball bat prior to passing away,” Peak said.

Authorities did not rereleasealease any additional informaiton.
