Two husband and wife duos teamed up to bring authentic Italian cuisine to Chula Vista Garbatella Osteria Bar at the Otay Ranch Town Center.

After three decades of operating restaurants in Mexico and Canada, Antonio Luiu and Diana Gonzalez, and Saul Plata and Carelma Rodriguez opened Garbatella Osteria Bar, located at 2015 Birch Road, Suite 2500. This is their first U.S. Concept that is a culmination of travels, and a lifetime of experiences.

The 206-seat restaurant pays homage to the history of Chef Luiu’s home. It is not only the name of his old neighborhood in Rome but it is also translated to “Humble” (Garbata) and “Beauty” (Bella)—a name they saw fit. The space offers a full bar, event space, outdoor space, an outdoor patio, a pizza oven, private wine lockers, and live music.

“We try to work with the local community. This is something that was missing in this part of Chula Vista. There are lots of chain restaurants here, but we wanted a family-centered space,” Luiu said.

According to Luiu, the menu will reflect a true Italian experience and the food that he was raised on, crafted by the hands of Italian Chefs.

Specialties include a Frittura Garbatella seafood dish, parmesan fondue, lasagna della garbage, classic carbonara, and the Antonello pizza topped with jumbo shrimp. Of the pasta dishes, Luiu said Linguine A Mare is his favorite.

The pizza oven will be managed by pizzaiolos who have traveled from and were trained in Italy. In addition to nightly dinner service.

Garbatella Osteria will also offer breakfast and lunch, plus high-quality Italian coffee, pastries, and breads from the cafe starting Feb. 16 during its grand opening from 8 a.m. through 10 p.m.

According to Luiu, those working in the most important positions within Garbatella Osteria’s Kitchen were born and raised in Italy.

“We try to keep the flavor one hundred percent Italian in every possible way,” Luiu said. “We’re trying to share the joy with as many people as possible."

With the grand opening of Garbatella Osteria Bar approaching on Feb.16, Luiu said Chula Vistans won't have to stray far to have a fine-dining experience.

“We are one more option for Chula Vistans to enjoy,” Luiu said. We have live music, good food, a nice bar, a great wine selection—everything,” Luiu said.
