The Family House of Pancakes served its customer's homestyle breakfast for the last time at their National City location on Jan.2. after 16 years of being in the community.
The family-owned business has served generous portions of pancakes and breakfast to South Bay communities since 1964 when their first location opened on Broadway in Chula Vista. Their National City location opened on East Plaza Boulevard in 2006, a 1.27-acre property that was sold last year to the popular burger chain, In-N-Out.
Plans to open a new restaurant on the property were announced by In-N-Out officials on Tuesday. Construction would take up to seven months if approved by the city.
The East Boulevard location would become In-N-Out's second location in National City if approved by the city. A traffic study is being evaluated by the city, and according to a city associate planner, David Welch, the results will determine if additional review is needed for environmental clearance." The project would require a public hearing before the Planning Commission.
Many showed their support through social media.
“I’m truly shocked … But I will follow where your business goes (because) our family loves and enjoys the service we get with Family House of Pancakes, plus it’s like family,” Mechelle Whelan said in a Facebook comment on the restaurant’s page.
Some customers shared their experiences with the business.
“I was a kid going to your restaurant in Chula vista back in the 80s every Sunday morning…I used to look forward to my monstrous hot chocolate with whip cream…moved a bit north and started going to the one on plaza, even though I felt it wasn't the same…then covid hit and everything changed… so sorry and I'm so sad!” Yvette Camacho said in a Facebook comment on the restaurant’s page.
The Chula Vista location remains unaffected. The Family House of Pancakes will be moving at a smaller location inside a shopping center on Broadway near Washington Street in Lemon Grove.
