A 54-year-old man who was incarcerated at the George Bailey detention center in Otay Mesa had suffered a medical emergency and passed away, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department announced today.
Deputies conducting a security check found the man in medical distress in his cell on Tuesday shortly after 7 p.m. Paramedics arrived at the scene, but despite life-saving measures, the man did not survive.
According to Sheriff’s Department Lt. Chris Steffen, the man was alone in his cell when he was stricken.
The Medical Examiner’s office was notified of the incident, and an autopsy is scheduled for August 18. The Sheriff's Department said it had notified the Citizen’s Law Enforcement Review Board of the death.
