More than 100 high school seniors were honored earlier this month at the annual Laurel for Leaders luncheon to recognize their work to improve their schools and their communities.

The luncheon was held on Feb.15 at San Diego State University, where more than 100 high school seniors were honored for the work they’ve already done to improve their schools and communities. The event was sponsored and supported by the Kiwanis Club of San Diego and the San Diego County Office of Education.

Each student at the event received a check for $300 as well as a recognition certificate from Laurels for Leaders, a local nonprofit started in 1957.

“I’m really grateful for the opportunity to participate because I got to meet so many students from different districts,” said Emma Hong, ASB president at Del Norte High School. “It’s really empowering to see that despite our differences, we all have that common ground that we want to help our communities.”

Students began the event with a morning workshop where they were able to connect and share ideas with each other, along with a financial wellness presentation by Sponsor U.S. Bank and a group discussion with a current Associated Students leader. This year, the keynote speaker was Christiane Maertens, founder of DoGoodery, a consulting agency that works with brands committed to doing good.
