A 46-year-old man pleaded guilty today to a second-degree murder count and faces 16 years to life in prison for stabbing his husband to death.

Daniel Scott Jordan will be sentenced on Jan.11 in El Cajon Superior Court for the slaying of Kevin Powell, 38, at their Mount Helix home on Aug. 11, 2020. He also faces an allegation of using a deadly weapon in the killing.

According to Prosecutor Eva Kilamyan, Jordan was arrested nine days later in Reno, Nevada. Chula Vista Police found Powell, an employee for the City of Chula Vista, in bed with 50 stab wounds and a kitchen knife embedded in his chest, during a welfare check.

According to CVPD Lt. Thomas Seiver, Powell's work supervisor asked police
to check on him after he missed several meetings. Kilamyan said Jordan also did not show up for work and was arrested in Reno after he was taken to a hospital there for an apparent suicide attempt.

Kilamyan said the couple had marital problems, and Powell was seeking a divorce.  Powell was a human resources manager for the city of Chula Vista and previously worked in similar positions for Contra Costa County, San Diego County, and the city of Coronado.
