The preliminary hearing for Larry Millete, the husband of missing Chula Vista mother of three May “Maya” Millete, concluded its third day on Monday with testimony from Chula Vista Police Detective and a San Diego County District Attorney investigator.
Millete is charged with the murder of his wife Maya, who has been missing since Jan.7, 2021.
According to District Attorney Investigator Matthew Grindley, Larry’s cell phone “showed very limited activity” between 6:45 a.m. and around 6:30 p.m. the day following Maya’s disappearance. Surveillance footage from neighboring homes showed a black Lexus SUV leave the Millete home at around 6:45 a.m. and return about 12 hours later, Chula Vista Police Det. Jessie Vicente testified last week.
Text messages between Larry and his work supervisor were presented in San Diego Court that showed text threads of Larry sharing details of his deteriorating marriage with Maya to his supervisor. Larry shared a screenshot of a text thread between himself and Maya on Jan.6,
In that text thread, Maya wrote to Larry “I DONT WANT TO BE YOUR WIFE ANYMORE. I’m filing whether you like it or not. I should have left a long time ago and this time I’m not going to look back and say that again.”
Larry called off from work on Jan.6 and Jan.7 due to being “mentally, physically, and emotionally spent”. Investigators testified multiple people attempted to reach Larry on Jan.8, but to no avail.
Maya’s younger brother Jay-R Talabanza testified he drove to the Millete home on Jan.8 after increasing concerns from family members not being able to contact her. He testified that Larry told him he had just gotten home from work.
Investigators have also testified regarding Larry’s internet search history, which included searches for “subliminal wife training”, and searches regarding sedatives like Flunitrazepam and Rohypnol. Larry had also emailed spell casters to buy potions to make Maya fall in love with him again and incapacitate her.
The judge will decide whether there is enough evidence to justify holding criminal charges against Larry. The judge’s ruling will decide whether a trial will be scheduled or the charges against Larry will be dropped.
