A California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer was investigating the accidental death of a Chula Vista driver when someone fired a firearm, shooting near the officer.

CHP reported that the 26-year-old Chula Vista man was killed on Sunday afternoon when he lost control of his Toyota Tacoma pickup and crashed near the intersection of Interstate-805 North and the State Route 94.

According to Times of San Diego, the vehicle collided with the retaining rail.

When a CHP officer responded to that accident and was on the scene, someone fired from a moving vehicle on the Market Street bridge.

When the officer observed a driver sped up and fled from the area where the shots had been fired.

The authorities are investigating the shooting and looking for potential witnesses to that attack.
