No injuries were reported.
The San Diego County Sheriffs' department received a call around 2:48 p.m. at 13531 Otay Lakes Road. According to Sgt. Shane Burt at the Imperial Beach sheriff’s station, the pilot was conducting a maintenance check flight when he began experiencing flight-control issues.
Officials attributed “strong crosswinds and flight control issues" to having caused the aircraft to crashland sideways on the runway of Skydive San Diego.
According to the sheriff’s department, the aircraft sustained damage to the landing gear and the right-wing.
According to Burt, the pilot was not injured and declined treatment. The crash had no damage to the surrounding property.
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration responded to the scene to conduct an investigation.
