San Diego State University announced on Friday that it received a record number of candidates who applied for the Fall 2022 semester.
A total 76,692 candidates were recorded by the institution, coming from all 50 states with a record number of first-time applicants from California. The institution announced candidates come from 74 countries, including both first-year and transfer students.
Another record was set when the university received 99,027 undergraduate applications.
"This is an incredibly positive testament to the resilience of students and their families, as well as the value they place on higher education," said SDSU President Adela de la Torre. "A record number of San Diegans, Californians and students everywhere see SDSU as their pathway for a brighter future."
There were over 7,000 graduate applications to date, bringing the total applications to over 106,000.
"This also further demonstrates the importance that we grow, and we grow quickly," de la Torre said. "Our campus expansion at SDSU Mission Valley and our new programs at SDSU Imperial Valley will both be essential if we are to fulfill our promise to the incredibly diverse and deserving students at our door, looking for an opportunity."
Applications to the institution for the fall semester typically closes in November. However, that deadline was extended to Dec.15 to further support families who have been affected by the pandemic and other hardships.
The university has begun admitting early applicants and all other prospective students. In March, students will be notified of their admission status.
San Diego State University was founded in 1897 and has about 34,500 students to date with an acceptance rate of around 37 percent, according to U.S. News and World Report's data which was last update in Fall 2020. The university is ranked #148 the 2022 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities.
